According to actual research, global energy consumption is expected to double by 2026 compared to values from 2022, the beginning of the "AI era". Researchers say that this new demand for energy "cannot be met in a sustainable way". AI directly contributes to climate change, and we're doing nothing to stop it. If anything, we're making it worse by pumping out a thousand new ChatGPT wrapper AI startup companies! That leads us to the next reason:
Pretty much everything you need can be done with existing tools – not even necessarily AI tools! So there's no reason to, for example, make yet another website for de-yellowing your photos – it can be done without using any AI in even the simplest photo editors. That applies to like 90% of AI tools currently available.
If you use generative AI trained on other people's data, it's most likely using copyrighted material, be it art, text, or music. This is practically stealing at this point – you are using other people's art without their permission. Imagine that you're an actual artist (not one of those "prompt engineers") – would you be happy if your work was stolen and used for training generative AI?
Just think about all that when coming up with your "brand new" AI tool. I don't think the world will be a better place with your new tool – it'll just waste resources, time and money.
